Five Elements in BaZi (Wu Xing)
The Five Elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water (五行 / Wu Xing) — are the foundation of BaZi. Every stem and branch in your chart is an element, and their balance around your Day Master drives the entire reading.
Generating and controlling cycles
- Generating: Wood feeds Fire, Fire makes Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal holds Water, Water grows Wood.
- Controlling: Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water quenches Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood.
- A balanced chart flows smoothly through these cycles; an excess or absence of one element signals what to strengthen or temper.
Your elemental balance
- Counting the elements in your eight characters shows what is abundant and what is missing.
- The element your chart most needs — the useful god — informs favorable colors, directions, careers and timing.
FAQ
What if an element is missing from my chart?
A missing element is common and not inherently bad. Readers look at overall balance and which element the chart actually needs, not just presence or absence.
Are BaZi’s five elements the same as Western elements?
No. Wu Xing (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) are five phases of energy and differ from the classical Western four elements.
